Meta description: Why my phone stayed quiet after I became a notary, what I learned the hard way, and the first step new notaries in Sarasota and Charlotte County should take.
I still remember how excited I was when I got my commission. I had my stamp, my supplies, and my yellow Jeep. I felt ready. I really thought the phone would start ringing right away.
I thought my phone would ring. It didn't.
Then nothing happened.
I sat there in North Port waiting for calls that never came. I thought my friends would call. I thought my family would tell everybody they knew. I thought becoming a notary public meant people would somehow just find me. One of the first hard lessons I learned building Dragonfly Mobile Notary was this, getting commissioned and getting business are two very different things.
That quiet phone can mess with your confidence. I know because I lived it. In those early days, I kept checking my phone like I was waiting on some big break. I had all this energy and no appointments. One of the most common things I tell new notaries now is that a stamp does not create demand by itself. People have to know you exist.
Here is the lesson I learned the hard way. Your friends and family love you, but they are not your business plan.
That does not mean they do not support you. It just means most people do not need a mobile notary every week. They may cheer you on, like your posts, and tell you they are proud of you. But that is very different from sending steady work your way. I get calls about this all the time from new notaries in Sarasota County and Charlotte County. They think something is wrong because the people closest to them are not turning into regular clients. Nothing is wrong. That is just not where most of the work comes from.
The real shift happened for me when I stopped waiting on people I already knew and started putting my business where strangers could find it. That is when things began to change. A stranger searching online for a notary near them is often much closer to booking than a friend who likes your announcement post.
One of the most useful things I did was get serious about my Google Business Profile. If you are new, do that today. Set it up completely. Add your service area. Add real photos. Make sure your hours are accurate. If you offer mobile notary or remote online notary services, say that clearly. If you serve North Port, Sarasota County, Charlotte County, and Southwest Florida, put that in the places where it fits naturally.
Then ask for your first review from someone you have actually helped.
That part matters. Do not overthink it. If you helped somebody with a real appointment, ask them to leave an honest review. One of the most common mistakes I see is new notaries waiting until they have dozens of clients before they ask. Start with one. Then get the next one. Those early reviews help people trust that you are a real business, not just a name online.
Looking back, I did not need more waiting. I needed more visibility. I needed to stop hoping my personal circle would carry the business and start showing up where real customers were already looking.
So if your phone is quiet right now, take a breath. It does not mean you picked the wrong path. It does not mean you are bad at this. It just means you have to go where the strangers are.
